Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Beach: How to Combine the Perfect Trip

Why Combine Safari and Zanzibar?

Tanzania offers something no other country in Africa can match: world-class safari and pristine tropical beaches in one trip. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire deliver the ultimate wildlife experience, while Zanzibar's white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and spice-infused culture provide the perfect post-safari relaxation. The two destinations complement each other beautifully — adventure followed by bliss.

How to Connect Safari to Zanzibar

Getting from the safari circuit to Zanzibar is straightforward:

  • Flight from Arusha/JRO to Zanzibar: Multiple daily flights, approximately 1 hour. Airlines include Coastal Aviation, Precision Air, and Auric Air. Expect $150–$300 one way.
  • Flight from Serengeti airstrip to Zanzibar: Direct connections available (usually via Arusha). Saves a full day of driving back to Arusha. Recommended for 10+ day itineraries.
  • Flight from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar: If your safari ends in Dar (southern circuit), the flight is just 20 minutes. Ferries are also available (2 hours).

Sample Itineraries

10 Days: Classic Safari + Zanzibar

The most popular combination — 6 nights of safari followed by 3 nights on Zanzibar.

  • Days 1–2: Tarangire National Park (elephants, baobabs)
  • Days 3–5: Serengeti National Park (migration, Big Five)
  • Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater (Big Five in one day)
  • Day 7: Fly to Zanzibar, transfer to beach resort
  • Days 8–10: Zanzibar — beach, Stone Town, snorkeling, spice tour

14 Days: Extended Safari + Zanzibar

For travelers who want to explore deeper, this itinerary adds Lake Manyara and extends Zanzibar time. See our full itinerary options for day-by-day breakdowns.

7 Days: Quick Safari + Zanzibar

Short on time? A 3-night safari (Ngorongoro + Serengeti) followed by 3 nights on Zanzibar still delivers an incredible experience.

Best Time for Safari + Zanzibar

The good news: safari and Zanzibar peak seasons overlap well. The best months for safari (June–October, January–February) also offer great beach weather on Zanzibar. Avoid April–May when both destinations experience heavy rain.

What to Do in Zanzibar

  • Stone Town: UNESCO World Heritage old town with winding alleys, ornate doors, rooftop restaurants, and the fascinating history of the spice trade
  • Beach time: North coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) for swimming any tide; east coast (Paje, Jambiani) for kite surfing and turquoise shallows
  • Snorkeling and diving: Mnemba Atoll offers world-class reef diving. Prison Island has giant tortoises and coral gardens
  • Spice tour: Visit working spice plantations growing cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, and cardamom — the source of Zanzibar's historic wealth
  • Sunset dhow cruise: Sail on a traditional wooden dhow as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean
  • Jozani Forest: Home to the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey — found nowhere else on Earth

Costs for the Combo Trip

Budget estimates per person for a 10-day safari + Zanzibar trip:

  • Budget: $3,500–$4,500 (camping safari + guesthouse in Zanzibar)
  • Mid-range: $5,000–$7,000 (lodge safari + 3-star beach resort)
  • Luxury: $8,000–$15,000 (premium safari + 5-star beach resort)

These include all accommodation, meals on safari, Zanzibar hotel (usually B&B), internal flights, and park fees. International flights are additional.
