Tanzania's National Parks: An Overview
Tanzania has 22 national parks, 33 game reserves, and 38 conservation areas — the most extensive protected area network in Africa. Together, these cover roughly 38% of the country's land area. For safari travelers, the parks fall into three main circuits, each with a distinct character.
The Northern Circuit
The most popular and accessible safari route, based from Arusha. This circuit contains Tanzania's most famous parks and can be driven in a continuous loop.
- Serengeti National Park (14,763 km²): Tanzania's flagship park. Great Migration, massive predator populations, iconic African savanna. 7–8 hours from Arusha by road or 1.5 hours by air.
- Ngorongoro Conservation Area (8,292 km²): Home to the Ngorongoro Crater — the world's largest unbroken caldera. Big Five viewing, Maasai culture, and Empakaai Crater hiking.
- Tarangire National Park (2,850 km²): Elephant paradise with ancient baobab trees. Excellent dry-season game viewing. 2.5 hours from Arusha.
- Lake Manyara National Park (330 km²): Compact but diverse. Tree-climbing lions, flamingos, and over 400 bird species. 2 hours from Arusha.
- Arusha National Park (137 km²): Small park near town with Mount Meru backdrop. Colobus monkeys, giraffes, and Momela Lakes. Good for a half-day excursion.
The Southern Circuit
Remote, wild, and far less visited. Based from Dar es Salaam. Offers activities not available in the north: boat safaris, extensive walking safaris.
- Ruaha National Park (20,226 km²): Tanzania's largest park. Wild dogs, huge lion prides, sable antelope. Genuinely remote — 2–3 other vehicles per day.
- Nyerere National Park (Selous) (5,000+ km² tourism zone): Boat safaris on the Rufiji River, walking safaris, wild dog populations. 45-minute flight from Dar.
- Mikumi National Park (3,230 km²): Most accessible southern park (4 hours from Dar by road). Similar landscape to Serengeti. Good budget option.
- Udzungwa Mountains National Park (1,990 km²): No vehicle access — hiking only. Rainforest, waterfalls, endemic primates. Tanzania's top trekking park.
The Western Circuit
The most remote and exclusive. Requires fly-in access. Minimal tourism infrastructure but extraordinary wildlife.
- Mahale Mountains National Park (1,613 km²): Chimpanzee trekking on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. One of Africa's most unique wildlife experiences.
- Gombe Stream National Park (52 km²): Jane Goodall's research site. Habituated chimpanzees. Tanzania's smallest park.
- Katavi National Park (4,471 km²): One of Africa's wildest parks. Enormous hippo and crocodile concentrations. Almost zero tourists.
Which Parks Should You Visit?
- First-time visitors: Northern circuit (Tarangire + Serengeti + Ngorongoro). See our sample itineraries.

- Budget travelers: Tarangire + Lake Manyara + Ngorongoro (lower park fees, shorter distances).
