Climbing Kilimanjaro and Safari Combo: How to Plan the Ultimate Tanzania Trip

Kilimanjaro + Safari: The Ultimate Tanzania Adventure

Climbing Africa's highest peak (5,895m) and then going on safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro — it doesn't get more epic than this. Many travelers combine these two experiences into a single trip, and with good planning, it works beautifully. Here's how to design your combo trip.

Which Order: Climb First or Safari First?

Climb first, safari second — this is the standard and recommended order for good reasons:

  • The climb is physically demanding. You want to tackle it while you're fresh, not after several days of early mornings and safari vehicle travel.
  • Safari is the perfect reward and recovery after the climb. Comfortable lodges, good food, and wildlife viewing from a vehicle feels luxurious after a week on the mountain.
  • Both start from the Kilimanjaro/Arusha area, so logistics flow naturally: Moshi/Kilimanjaro gate → summit → descend → Arusha → safari parks.

How Many Days Do You Need?

A minimum combo trip requires 12–14 days:

  • Kilimanjaro climb: 6–8 days depending on route (we recommend 7+ days for better acclimatization and summit success rates)
  • Recovery: 1–2 days rest in Arusha between climb and safari
  • Safari: 4–7 days on the northern circuit

Sample 14-Day Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive Kilimanjaro Airport, transfer to Moshi
  • Days 2–8: Kilimanjaro climb (7-day Machame or Lemosho route)
  • Day 9: Recovery day in Arusha. Celebrate your summit with a good dinner.
  • Days 10–14: 5-day safari (Tarangire → Serengeti → Ngorongoro). See our itinerary guide.

Adding Zanzibar

For the ultimate triple combo (Kilimanjaro + Safari + Beach), add 3–4 nights in Zanzibar after safari. This extends the trip to 17–18 days but delivers the full Tanzania experience: mountain, bush, and beach.

Best Time for the Combo

You need good conditions for both climbing and safari:

  • January–February: Warm and mostly dry on Kilimanjaro, calving season in the Serengeti. Excellent combo months.
  • June–October: Dry season for both. Best summit weather and best safari visibility. July–August is peak season for both — book early.
  • Avoid April–May: Heavy rain makes Kilimanjaro routes slippery and dangerous, and safari roads can be challenging.

Physical Preparation

Kilimanjaro requires no technical climbing skills, but it is physically demanding. The safari portion is a welcome rest by comparison. Key preparation:

  • Cardiovascular fitness: hiking, running, or cycling for 3–6 months before
  • Altitude acclimatization: choose a 7+ day route. Shorter routes have lower summit success rates
  • Pack separately for mountain and safari — different gear requirements. See our safari packing list

Costs

Budget for the combo trip per person:

  • Kilimanjaro climb: $2,500–$5,000 (depending on route, duration, and service level)
  • Safari (5 days): $1,500–$4,000 (budget to mid-range)
  • Total combo: $4,000–$9,000 per person
