Green Season Safari in Tanzania: Why the Rainy Season Might Be Your Best Bet

What Is "Green Season"?

"Green season" is the travel industry's optimistic name for the rainy season — specifically March through May (long rains) and November (short rains) in Tanzania. The landscape transforms from golden-brown savanna to emerald-green paradise. And for savvy travelers, it offers some of the best value in African safari travel.

Why Consider Green Season?

  • 30–40% lower prices: Lodges and operators drop rates significantly. A mid-range safari that costs $500/day in peak season might be $300–$350/day in green season.
  • Far fewer tourists: Popular sightings that attract 10–20 vehicles in July might have 2–3 in April. You'll have wildlife encounters largely to yourself.
  • Stunning landscapes: The Serengeti's famous golden plains turn vivid green. Dramatic storm clouds create extraordinary photography conditions — the light is richer and more dramatic than dry-season blue skies.
  • Baby animals: Many species time their births to coincide with the rains when food is abundant. Baby antelope, zebra foals, and bird nestlings are everywhere.
  • Birding paradise: Over 200 migratory bird species arrive for the rains. Breeding plumage, nesting behavior, and sheer species diversity peak during the wet months.

The Honest Downsides

  • Rain: It rains — sometimes heavily. But rarely all day. Mornings are often clear, with rain falling in afternoon showers. A good rain jacket and positive attitude are all you need.
  • Difficult roads: Some park roads become muddy or impassable. Your operator should know which routes are viable.
  • Dispersed wildlife: With water everywhere, animals spread out rather than concentrating at rivers and waterholes. You may drive further between sightings.
  • Some camps close: A handful of remote camps close during the heaviest rains (April–May). Most parks remain fully operational.

Best Green Season Months

  • November: The best-value month in Tanzania. Short rains are light and intermittent. Wildlife is excellent. Prices are low but most camps remain open. Highly recommended.
  • March: The tail end of the calving season. Lush and green but not yet heavily rainy. Good value.
  • April–May: The cheapest period. Heavier rain but dramatic scenery. Best for adventurous travelers who don't mind getting muddy.

Who Should Visit in Green Season?

Green season is ideal for: budget travelers, photographers seeking dramatic light and green landscapes, birdwatchers, repeat visitors who've done the dry season, and anyone who values solitude over guaranteed perfect weather.

It's less suitable for: travelers on a once-in-a-lifetime trip who want guaranteed optimal conditions, those who dislike rain, or visitors specifically targeting migration river crossings (those are July–September only).
