Two Ways to Experience the Bush
Choosing between camping and lodge accommodation is one of the first decisions in planning your Tanzania safari. Both have genuine advantages, and the right choice depends on your priorities: budget, comfort level, atmosphere preference, and what kind of experience you're seeking.
Camping Safari
What It Means
Sleeping in provided tents at designated campsites inside national parks. A camp cook prepares all meals. Bathroom facilities are shared (flush toilets and hot showers at most established sites). Your safari guide doubles as camp manager.
Advantages
- Cost: 30–50% cheaper than equivalent lodge safaris. A 5-day camping safari runs $1,200–$1,800/person vs $2,500–$4,000 for lodges.
- Atmosphere: Sleeping in a tent in the Serengeti — hearing lions roar at night, hyenas calling, and the dawn chorus of birds — is raw and unforgettable.
- Flexibility: Campsites in national parks are positioned in excellent wildlife areas, sometimes better than fixed lodges.
- Authenticity: Camping feels like a "real" safari experience. Campfire dinners under African stars are a highlight.
Disadvantages
- Comfort: Basic tents, thin mattresses, limited privacy. No hot tubs or pools.
- Facilities: Shared bathrooms (though most are cleaner than expected). No electricity for charging except from the vehicle.
- Setup time: Arriving at camp means setting up; leaving means packing down. This uses time you could spend on game drives.
Lodge Safari
What It Means
Staying in permanent lodges or luxury tented camps with private bathrooms, comfortable beds, restaurants, and often swimming pools. All logistics are handled by lodge staff.
Advantages
- Comfort: En-suite bathrooms, hot showers on demand, real beds, electricity and charging points, sometimes WiFi.
- Dining: Multi-course meals, bar service, special dietary accommodation.
- Relaxation: The midday break between game drives is genuinely restful — pool, lounge, spa at some lodges.
- Convenience: Everything is ready when you arrive. No setup or teardown. More time for wildlife.
Disadvantages
- Cost: Significantly more expensive.
- Distance from action: Some lodges are on park boundaries rather than inside prime wildlife areas.
- Less "wild" atmosphere: The bush sounds are muffled by solid walls. You're comfortable but insulated.
The Middle Ground: Tented Camps
Permanent tented camps offer the best of both worlds — canvas walls that let you hear the bush, but with en-suite bathrooms, real beds, and quality dining. For first-timers: Mid-range lodges or tented camps. You'll be comfortable enough to enjoy the experience without distraction, and the value is excellent.
For budget travelers: Camping — the wildlife is identical, the atmosphere is arguably better, and the savings are significant.
For comfort seekers: Lodges with pools and good food — safari is tiring, and a comfortable base enhances the experience.
