Big Five Safari in Tanzania: Where to See Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Rhinos, and Buffalo

What Are the Big Five?

The Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and Cape buffalo — were originally named by big-game hunters as the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot. Today, they're the five most sought-after animals to photograph on safari. Tanzania is one of the best countries in Africa to see all five, though each species requires a different strategy and location.

Where to See Each Species

Lion

Tanzania has the largest lion population in Africa — approximately 15,000 individuals. You're almost guaranteed to see lions on any safari of 3+ days.

  • Best park: Serengeti (3,000+ lions)
  • Also excellent: Ngorongoro Crater (guaranteed sightings), Ruaha (large prides)
  • Difficulty: Easy — lions are common and often rest in open areas

Leopard

Secretive and elusive, but Tanzania offers some of the best leopard viewing in Africa.

  • Best park: Serengeti (Seronera valley — sausage trees along the river are favorite resting spots)
  • Also excellent: Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater rim forests
  • Difficulty: Moderate — experienced guides know the regular leopard territories

Elephant

Tanzania's elephant population exceeds 60,000 — the largest in East Africa.

  • Best park: Tarangire (up to 3,000 in dry season — the most dramatic elephant viewing in East Africa)
  • Also excellent: Serengeti, Ruaha (12,000 elephants), Ngorongoro Crater (mostly old bulls)
  • Difficulty: Very easy — elephants are large, common, and active throughout the day

Black Rhino

The hardest of the Big Five to see. Black rhinos are critically endangered, and Tanzania's population is small and heavily protected.

  • Best park: Ngorongoro Crater (25–30 individuals — the single best place in East Africa for rhino sightings)
  • Also possible: Serengeti (very rare), Mkomazi National Park (small population)
  • Difficulty: Challenging — even in the Crater, rhinos are often distant. Binoculars are essential.

Cape Buffalo

Often underrated by first-timers, buffalo are imposing animals with a justified reputation as one of Africa's most dangerous species.

  • Best park: Ngorongoro Crater (large herds on the crater floor)
  • Also excellent: Serengeti, Tarangire, virtually all northern circuit parks
  • Difficulty: Easy — large herds are common across all parks

The Best Big Five Itinerary

For the highest probability of seeing all Big Five in a single trip:

  1. Tarangire (1–2 days): Elephants guaranteed. Lions likely. Buffalo common.
  2. Serengeti (2–3 days): Lions guaranteed. Leopard likely. Buffalo and elephants common.
  3. Ngorongoro Crater (1 day): All Big Five possible in a single morning. Black rhino is the key target here — and this is your best chance.

With this 5–6 day itinerary, the probability of seeing all Big Five is over 90% — and lion, elephant, and buffalo are virtually guaranteed.
