Which Tanzania National Park Is Best? A Park-by-Park Comparison

Choosing the Right Park for You

Tanzania has 22 national parks, but most safari itineraries visit 2–4 on the northern circuit. Each park has a distinct personality. Here's an honest comparison to help you choose — or decide which combination works best.

The Northern Circuit Parks Compared

Serengeti National Park

  • Best for: The Great Migration, predator viewing, sheer scale and "endless Africa" feeling
  • Unique factor: Size (14,763 km²), 3,000+ lions, migration spectacle
  • Downside: Highest park fees ($82.60/day), long drive from Arusha (7–8 hours)
  • Minimum time: 2 nights (3+ recommended)
  • Full guide: Serengeti Complete Guide

Ngorongoro Crater

  • Best for: Big Five in one day, dramatic scenery, concentration of wildlife
  • Unique factor: World's largest intact caldera, 25,000 animals in 260 km²
  • Downside: Expensive ($82.60 entry + $295 vehicle descent fee), crowded during peak season, limited to 6 hours on the floor
  • Minimum time: 1 day (half-day on crater floor)
  • Full guide: Ngorongoro Crater Guide

Tarangire National Park

  • Best for: Elephants, baobab scenery, birdwatching, a less crowded alternative
  • Unique factor: Up to 3,000 dry-season elephants, ancient baobabs, 550 bird species
  • Downside: Less diverse than Serengeti, no rhino
  • Minimum time: 1 night (2 ideal)
  • Full guide: Tarangire Guide

Lake Manyara National Park

  • Best for: Tree-climbing lions, flamingos, birdwatching, a quick half-day visit
  • Unique factor: Compact diversity — 5 vegetation zones, Rift Valley escarpment backdrop
  • Downside: Small park (330 km²), less game than larger parks
  • Minimum time: Half day
  • Full guide: Lake Manyara Guide

If You Can Only Visit One Park

Ngorongoro Crater — in a single half-day, you can see all Big Five and dozens of other species in one of the most dramatically beautiful settings on Earth. No other park delivers that concentration of wildlife in that timeframe.

If you have 2+ days, the Serengeti is unmatched for overall wildlife experience and the feeling of being in wild Africa.

Best Park Combinations

  • Classic (5–7 days): Tarangire + Serengeti + Ngorongoro
  • Budget (3–4 days): Lake Manyara + Ngorongoro (+ optionally Tarangire)
  • Comprehensive (8–10 days): All four northern parks + Zanzibar
  • Off-the-beaten-path: Ruaha + Nyerere (southern circuit)
