How to Plan Your Tanzania Safari Itinerary
Tanzania's northern safari circuit is the most popular route, connecting four world-class parks within driving distance of Arusha. But with 22 national parks and dozens of game reserves, there are many ways to design your trip. Here are our three most requested itineraries, tested with hundreds of travelers, covering 7, 10, and 14 days.
7-Day Northern Circuit Safari
This is the classic Tanzania safari — the perfect first-time itinerary covering the best of the northern circuit. It hits the three essential parks with enough time for thorough wildlife viewing.
Day 1: Arrive Arusha
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Transfer to your Arusha hotel. Evening briefing with your safari guide. Rest and prepare for early start.
Day 2: Arusha → Tarangire National Park
Drive 2.5 hours to Tarangire National Park. Afternoon game drive among massive baobab trees and enormous elephant herds — Tarangire has one of the highest elephant densities in Africa. Look for tree-climbing pythons and the striking Tarangire swallow. Overnight at lodge or tented camp.
Day 3: Tarangire → Serengeti National Park
Full-day drive to the Serengeti via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (5–6 hours). Game drive en route through the Serengeti's vast plains. Arrive at your camp in the central Serengeti (Seronera area) or reposition based on current migration patterns.
Days 4–5: Serengeti National Park
Two full days of morning and afternoon game drives. The Serengeti's resident wildlife is extraordinary: lion prides, leopards in sausage trees, cheetahs hunting on the plains, hippo pools, and vast herds of zebra and wildebeest. Optional sunrise balloon safari ($550–$650).
Day 6: Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater
Morning game drive, then drive to the Ngorongoro Crater rim (3–4 hours). Afternoon at leisure enjoying the spectacular crater views from your lodge — the rim sits at 2,300 meters with sweeping views across the 260 km² caldera floor below.
Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha
Early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater for a half-day game drive. The crater floor is the best place in East Africa to see the Big Five in a single morning. Spot black rhino (the crater has a stable population of 25+), lion, elephant, buffalo, and sometimes leopard. Drive back to Arusha (3–4 hours). Departure or overnight.
10-Day Safari + Zanzibar Combo
This itinerary combines the 7-day northern circuit with 3 nights on Zanzibar — the ideal safari and beach combination.
Days 1–7: Northern Circuit Safari
Follow the 7-day itinerary above. On Day 7, transfer to Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport.
Day 8: Fly to Zanzibar
Short flight from Arusha/JRO to Zanzibar (1 hour). Transfer to your beach resort on the north or east coast. Afternoon free to swim, snorkel, or simply decompress from early safari mornings.
Days 9–10: Zanzibar
Full days to explore: Stone Town's UNESCO World Heritage spice markets, snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll, sunset dhow cruise, or the Jozani Forest (home to rare red colobus monkeys). Depart Zanzibar on Day 10 evening or Day 11 morning.
This 10-day format is our most popular itinerary. It balances wildlife adventure with relaxation and gives you a complete Tanzania experience. View our safari packages for pre-designed options.
14-Day Ultimate Tanzania Itinerary
For travelers with two weeks, this itinerary adds deeper exploration of the northern circuit plus either the southern parks or an extended Zanzibar stay.
Days 1–2: Arusha & Lake Manyara
Arrive, overnight in Arusha. Day 2: drive to Lake Manyara National Park for an afternoon game drive. Famous for tree-climbing lions and massive flocks of flamingos along the alkaline lake shore.
Days 3–4: Tarangire National Park
Two full days in Tarangire for thorough exploration. With extra time, your guide can venture beyond the main track to quieter areas with wild dogs and lesser kudu.
Days 5–8: Serengeti National Park (4 Nights)
Four nights allows positioning in different Serengeti zones: central Seronera for resident predators, Western Corridor for Grumeti crossings (June–July), or northern Kogatende for Mara River crossings (August–October). Mobile camps are ideal for this extended Serengeti exploration.
Days 9–10: Ngorongoro Crater & Highlands
Full crater descent plus a day in the Ngorongoro Highlands — Empakaai Crater walk (with stunning views of the alkaline lake below and Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano) and a Maasai village visit.
Days 11–14: Zanzibar (4 Nights)
Extended beach time with opportunities for: Stone Town cultural tour, spice plantation visit, swimming with dolphins, deep-sea fishing, or a day trip to Prison Island. Depart Day 14.
Itinerary Tips
- Minimum 5 days for a satisfying safari. Less than 5 days means too much driving and too little wildlife time.
- Don't try to see everything. Tanzania is enormous. Pick 3–4 parks maximum for a 7-day safari. Rushing between parks wastes time on roads.
- Include at least 2 nights in the Serengeti. One night is not enough — the park is 14,763 km² and rewards extended exploration.
- Consider internal flights for 10+ day itineraries to reduce road time between distant parks.
