Serengeti vs Masai Mara: Which One Should You Choose?

The Ultimate Safari Showdown

The Serengeti and the Masai Mara are two halves of the same ecosystem, divided by a political border between Tanzania and Kenya. They share the Great Migration and much of the same wildlife, but the safari experience in each is distinctly different. Here's an honest, point-by-point comparison to help you choose — or decide to visit both.

Size and Scale

  • Serengeti: 14,763 km² — one of the largest national parks in Africa
  • Masai Mara: 1,510 km² (national reserve) + surrounding conservancies

The Serengeti is nearly 10 times larger. This means more room to explore, fewer vehicles per square kilometer, and a greater sense of wilderness. The Mara's compact size means wildlife density per km² is very high, but so is tourist density.

The Great Migration

This is often the deciding factor. The migration is a year-round cycle:

  • Serengeti hosts the migration for ~9 months (October–July): calving on the southern plains (January–March), movement through the Western Corridor (May–June), and Mara River crossings in the north (July–October).
  • Masai Mara hosts the migration for ~3 months (August–October): the herds cross into Kenya for the Mara's green grazing before returning south.

If your schedule is flexible, the Serengeti gives you far more migration options. If you can only travel in August–September, both destinations offer river crossings. See our complete migration guide for month-by-month positioning.

Wildlife Comparison

Both parks are phenomenal for wildlife. Key differences:

  • Lions: Serengeti has ~3,000 lions (Africa's largest population). Mara has ~850–900 in the greater ecosystem. Both offer outstanding lion viewing.
  • Leopards: Both excellent. Serengeti's Seronera valley and Mara's riverine forests are prime leopard habitat.
  • Cheetahs: Both parks have healthy populations. The Serengeti's open plains may offer slightly better cheetah-hunting viewing.
  • Rhino: Mara conservancies have better rhino populations. The Serengeti has very few rhinos — for rhino in Tanzania, visit Ngorongoro Crater instead.
  • Unique to Tanzania: Wild dogs (rare), tree-climbing lions at Lake Manyara, chimpanzees at Mahale.

Cost Comparison

Kenya's Masai Mara is generally 20–30% cheaper than the equivalent Serengeti experience:

  • Park fees: Mara $80/person/day vs Serengeti $82.60/person/day (similar, but Mara conservancies can be $100+)
  • Accommodation: More budget options in the Mara. Serengeti's remote locations drive prices up.
  • Transport: Nairobi to Mara is closer (5–6 hours or 45-minute flight) vs Arusha to Serengeti (7–8 hours drive).

See our Tanzania cost guide for detailed pricing.

Activities Beyond Game Drives

  • Night game drives: Allowed in Mara conservancies; NOT allowed in the Serengeti
  • Walking safaris: Available in Mara conservancies and limited Serengeti areas
  • Hot air balloons: Both destinations offer balloon safaris. The Serengeti's vast plains arguably provide the more dramatic experience.
  • Cultural visits: Both offer Maasai village visits. Tanzania adds options like Hadzabe bushmen visits near Lake Eyasi.

Crowd Levels

This is where the Serengeti wins decisively. The Mara's small size means that during peak season (July–October), popular sightings can attract 20–30 vehicles. In the Serengeti, even during the busiest months, sightings outside central Seronera rarely have more than 5–8 vehicles.

The northern Serengeti (Kogatende/Lamai area) during river crossing season is genuinely exclusive — limited camps and difficult access keep vehicle numbers low.

Our Verdict

Choose the Serengeti if: You value space and wilderness, want more migration timing flexibility, plan to combine with Ngorongoro Crater, or prefer fewer tourist crowds.

Choose the Masai Mara if: Budget is your priority, you want a shorter trip, you value night drives and walking safaris, or you're combining with other Kenyan destinations.

Do both if you can. They complement each other beautifully — the Mara's intensity and the Serengeti's grandeur create a complete picture of East African safari at its finest.
