Why Ruaha Deserves Your Attention
Ruaha is Tanzania's largest national park at 20,226 km² — bigger than the Serengeti — yet receives a tiny fraction of the visitors. If you want a genuine wilderness experience with outstanding predator viewing and virtually no other safari vehicles, Ruaha is the answer. This is the Tanzania that safari veterans dream about: raw, remote, and richly rewarding.
Wildlife in Ruaha
- Lions: Ruaha has one of Tanzania's largest lion populations, with prides reaching 20+ individuals. The open landscape makes them easy to spot.
- Wild dogs: Ruaha is one of East Africa's best places to see the endangered African wild dog. Packs of 10–20 are regularly sighted.
- Elephants: Approximately 12,000 elephants — one of the largest populations in East Africa.
- Leopard: Common along the Great Ruaha River and rocky kopjes.
- Greater and lesser kudu: Both species are more easily seen here than anywhere else in Tanzania.
- Sable and roan antelope: Rare elsewhere, these striking antelopes are Ruaha regulars.
- Hippos and crocodiles: Massive concentrations in the river pools during dry season.
Best Time to Visit
- June–October (dry season): The best time. Animals concentrate along the Great Ruaha River, making game drives incredibly productive. Clear skies and golden light.
- November: Short rains begin. Still good game viewing with greening landscape and migrant birds.
- January–March: Green season. Lush scenery, baby animals, excellent birding. Roads can be rough.
- April–May: Heavy rains. Most camps close. Not recommended.
Getting to Ruaha
- By air: Scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam (1.5 hours) or charter flights from Arusha. This is the recommended and most practical way to reach Ruaha.
- By road: 10+ hours from Dar es Salaam on rough roads. Only for the adventurous.
Park Fees
- Entry fee: $30/person/24 hours — significantly cheaper than northern circuit parks
- Lower accommodation costs: Competition for guests means lodges offer better value than Serengeti equivalents
Why Choose Ruaha Over the Serengeti?
Ruaha won't replace the Serengeti — they're different experiences. But Ruaha offers what the Serengeti increasingly can't: genuine remoteness and exclusivity at a fraction of the price. You may see 2–3 other vehicles in an entire day. During peak Serengeti season, you might see that many in 10 minutes.
For repeat safari visitors, or travelers who value solitude and predator viewing over the migration spectacle, Ruaha is extraordinary.
