Nyerere National Park: Africa's Hidden Wilderness
Formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is one of Africa's largest protected areas. The northern photographic tourism zone alone covers over 5,000 km² — enormous, remote, and barely visited compared to the northern circuit. What makes Nyerere unique isn't just its size but its diversity of safari activities: game drives, boat safaris on the Rufiji River, and walking safaris — a combination available nowhere else in Tanzania.
Wildlife
- Wild dogs: Nyerere has one of Africa's largest wild dog populations. Sightings are more reliable here than almost anywhere else on the continent.
- Lions: Large prides throughout the ecosystem.
- Elephants: Significant herds, though populations suffered from poaching in past decades and are recovering.
- Hippos and crocodiles: The Rufiji River and its lakes support massive hippo pods and some of Africa's largest Nile crocodiles. Boat safaris bring you eye-level with these animals.
- Buffalo: Huge herds of Cape buffalo across the open floodplains.
- Birds: Over 440 species. The riverine habitat supports fish eagles, kingfishers, bee-eaters, and seasonal migrants.
Unique Activities
- Boat safari: Cruise the Rufiji River and its ox-bow lakes. Get eye-level with hippos, watch crocodiles basking on sandbanks, and spot elephants drinking on the river banks. Available nowhere else in Tanzania's major parks.
- Walking safari: Multi-hour bush walks with armed rangers. A completely different sensory experience — hearing the bush, reading tracks, smelling the earth. Nyerere is one of the best places in East Africa for walking safaris.
- Fly-camping: Spend a night in a basic bush camp deep in the reserve with minimal infrastructure. For adventurous souls seeking raw Africa.
Best Time to Visit
- June–October: Best months. Dry, clear, animals at water sources. River levels drop, concentrating hippos and crocodiles.
- November–March: Green season. Birding is excellent but some roads become challenging.
- April–May: Most camps close due to flooding. Not recommended.
Getting There
Fly-in from Dar es Salaam: 45-minute flight. Most practical option. Coastal Aviation and Safari Airlink operate daily scheduled flights. This can also connect with flights from Arusha or the Serengeti for a complete north-south Tanzania itinerary.
Combine with Ruaha
A southern circuit combining Nyerere + Ruaha (connected by a short flight) offers a completely different Tanzania experience from the busy northern circuit — raw, remote, and unforgettable. Request a southern circuit itinerary to explore this option.
