Hot Air Balloon Safari in the Serengeti: Is It Worth $600?

What Is a Serengeti Balloon Safari?

A hot air balloon safari is a sunrise flight over the Serengeti plains, followed by a champagne bush breakfast on landing. It's one of the most iconic experiences in African travel — floating silently above the savanna as the sun rises, watching wildlife from a perspective that no game drive can match. But at $550–$650 per person, it's a significant add-on. Is it worth it?

The Experience

  • 3:30–4:00 AM pickup from your camp or lodge. Drive to the launch site in darkness.
  • Pre-dawn inflation: Watch the massive balloon inflate by firelight — dramatic and photogenic.
  • Sunrise launch: The balloon lifts just as the sun breaks the horizon. The light is extraordinary.
  • 1-hour flight: The pilot controls altitude from treetop level (close enough to see animals' expressions) to 1,000+ feet (panoramic views of the endless plains). The silence is remarkable — no engine, no vibration, just the occasional whisper of the burner.
  • Wildlife from above: Depending on season and location, you may float over herds of wildebeest and zebra, spot hippos in rivers, see elephants feeding among acacias, or watch predators on their morning hunt. During migration season, the columns of animals stretching across the plains are breathtaking.
  • Bush breakfast: After landing (the touchdown is gentle — pilots are highly skilled), a champagne toast and full English breakfast are served on white linen in the middle of the bush. It's theatrical and wonderful.
  • Return to camp: A game drive on the way back to your lodge ensures you don't miss morning wildlife viewing.

Cost and Booking

  • Price: $550–$650 per person (2026 rates)
  • Includes: Balloon flight, champagne, bush breakfast, game drive transfer back to camp
  • Book early: Balloon flights are limited to 16 passengers per balloon (typically 2–3 balloons fly daily). During peak season (July–October), they sell out weeks in advance.
  • Operators: Serengeti Balloon Safaris is the established provider with multiple launch sites covering the central and northern Serengeti.
  • Weather dependent: Flights can be cancelled for high winds or rain. You'll be offered a refund or rebooking.

Is It Worth the Price?

Our honest verdict: Yes — for most travelers, it's a highlight of the trip. The combination of the sunrise, the silence, the aerial perspective on wildlife, and the bush breakfast creates a memory that stands apart from even the best game drives. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience in a once-in-a-lifetime destination.

That said, if you're on a tight budget, that $600 could fund an extra night in the Serengeti or two nights in Zanzibar. The wildlife viewing from a vehicle is already extraordinary — the balloon adds a layer of magic, but it's not essential.

Best Time for a Balloon Safari

Balloon flights operate year-round in the central Serengeti and seasonally in the northern and southern regions. The best months for the Serengeti are also the best for balloon safaris. During the migration (especially calving season in January–February), the aerial view of hundreds of thousands of animals on the plains is unmatched.
